AI Video Surveillance: Facial Recognition, License Plate Recognition, and Smart Automation

Regent5 is a licensed C10 and C7 contractor (CSLB 1033103) designing AI-powered security systems on Verkada and Ubiquiti UniFi, with Deep Sentinel live-guard monitoring layered on top where clients want a human in the loop. Serving Atherton, Woodside, Portola Valley, Hillsborough, Los Altos Hills, Palo Alto, and the wider Bay Area.

Facial Recognition, Configured Carefully

UniFi Protect processes facial recognition entirely on-device, so video never leaves the property for AI analysis, and can alert only on unrecognized faces after hours. Verkada's Person of Interest Only Face Search takes a different approach: it discards every face that doesn't match a defined watchlist rather than storing biometric data on everyone who walks past a camera. Regent5 configures either platform to match how much identification a client actually wants.

License Plate Recognition

Verkada License Plate Recognition and UniFi's dedicated AI-LPR camera and AI Dome read plates day and night, at ranges up to roughly 80 feet on the right lens, and can unlock a gate or trigger a scene when an approved vehicle arrives, or flag a plate that isn't on the list.

Loitering, Line Crossing, and Crowd Detection

Verkada lets you draw a zone on camera and set a dwell time, so a person standing in it for longer than a configured duration triggers an alert rather than just someone walking through. Line crossing adds directional logic, and compound alerts can combine a person detection with a specific time window or an armed state before firing.

Webhooks and Automation Triggers

Verkada's Access Events Webhooks and People of Interest API, and UniFi Protect's Alarm Manager, let a detection event do more than send a notification: turn on exterior lights when a person is detected after dark, unlock a door through UniFi Access when an approved plate is read, or reposition a PTZ camera automatically. Regent5 builds these triggers into the lighting and automation systems we already install, not as a separate bolt-on.

Where a Live Guard Fits In

AI catches and classifies the event. A Deep Sentinel guard decides what to do about it: talking through the camera, sounding a siren, or calling the police with a description already confirmed by the AI. Regent5 designs these as one system, not three separate ones bolted together.

System Design and Installation

Regent5 designs camera placement, lens selection, and detection zones for the identification tasks that actually matter on a property: faces at the door, plates at the gate, loitering along a fence line, and configures the automation triggers that connect them to lighting, access control, and alarms. Our own C10 electrical crew and C7 low-voltage crew work under one license.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Regent5 install facial recognition cameras?

Yes, on both Verkada and UniFi Protect. Verkada's Person of Interest Only Face Search only stores matches against a defined watchlist and discards everything else. UniFi Protect processes facial recognition on-device, so footage never leaves the property for AI analysis. Regent5 configures the approach based on what a client actually wants to identify.

Can license plate recognition open my gate automatically?

Yes. Verkada LPR and UniFi's AI-LPR camera or AI Dome can be configured to unlock a gate or door automatically when an approved plate is read, and flag any plate that isn't on the approved list.

Can the cameras trigger my lights or other automation, not just send an alert?

Yes. Verkada's webhooks and API, and UniFi Protect's Alarm Manager, can turn on exterior lights when a person is detected after dark, unlock a door when an approved vehicle arrives, or reposition a camera automatically. Regent5 wires these into the lighting and automation system already installed on the property.

What is loitering detection, and how is it different from basic motion detection?

Basic motion detection fires on any movement. Loitering detection only fires after a person stays inside a defined zone longer than a set duration, and line crossing only fires when someone crosses a specific line in a specific direction, which cuts down on false alerts from people just passing through.

What's the difference between AI detection and Deep Sentinel's live guards?

AI detects and classifies an event, such as a person loitering or an unrecognized face. A Deep Sentinel guard reviews that event in real time and decides whether to intervene with two-way audio, a siren, or a call to police. Regent5 can combine both on the same camera system.

How fast can Regent5 service an existing AI camera system?

Our dedicated service team handles VIP and estate clients with response times ranging from a few hours up to one to two business days, depending on distance and priority. We service existing Verkada and UniFi systems regardless of who installed them.

Vantage Lighting

Authorized dealer for Legrand's Vantage lighting and shading platform, an alternative to Lutron for large estates.
