Ketra is Lutron's most advanced light source, and the reason it matters is colour rendering. Most LED fixtures produce white light by pushing a blue diode through a phosphor coating, which leaves gaps in the spectrum. Ketra mixes multiple coloured channels to build white light with the spectrum filled in. The practical consequence is that materials look like themselves. Walnut reads as walnut. A rug's dyes separate rather than muddying. Skin looks like skin rather than like something under a fluorescent tube.
Two capabilities separate Ketra from every tunable white product, including Lutron's own. The first is the range and quality of the white itself: from deep warm at the bottom of the dimming curve up through daylight, holding colour rendering across the span rather than only at one favourable point. The second is saturated colour. Ketra can produce actual hues, not a warm-to-cool slider, which is what makes it the choice when a designer wants a wall washed in a specific tone for an evening or a room to shift character for an occasion. Most projects use the colour capability sparingly and the white capability constantly. That is the correct ratio, and part of our job is saying so.

Overhead down for a screen, perimeter held low but present so people can still read and see each other. The scene nobody thinks to ask for and everybody uses.

Saturated colour across the architecture while work surfaces stay under usable white. This is the capability no tunable white product has.
The fourth image is the one worth pausing on. Colour and white are running at the same time in the same room, on different channels, because Ketra builds white light by mixing coloured emitters rather than filtering a single blue diode. That is why it can do both, and it is the difference the two rooms in San Carlos exist to demonstrate.
Ketra's most persuasive feature is the one nobody notices working. The system can shift colour temperature and intensity across the day, warm and low at dawn, brighter and cooler through midday, warm again as the evening comes in, tracking the sun rather than a clock. Because the processor calculates sunrise, sunset, civil dawn, and civil dusk from the location of the house, that behaviour stays correct through every season without anyone adjusting anything. Done well it is invisible. People simply report that the house feels better in the evening and they are not sure why. Done badly it is distracting, which is why the transition rates and the levels at each waypoint are decisions we make deliberately rather than accepting a default.
The range covers downlights, lamps, linear, and track. D2 downlights at a two inch aperture in fixed, adjustable, and wall wash configurations, for both new construction and finished ceilings. A20 lamps in a standard A-series shape for sconces, pendants, and table lamps. S30 and S38 PAR lamps for track and recessed housings, with a choice of beam angles from tight spot to wide flood. Linear for coves and architectural detail. In practice a house rarely runs Ketra everywhere, and it should not. The usual pattern puts Ketra where people spend evenings and where materials matter most, the great room, the kitchen, the dining room, the primary suite, and a gallery wall if there is art. Secondary spaces run Rania or Lumaris on the same control system, which is the point of the range.

That matters more than it first appears. A house running Ketra inside and conventional landscape lighting outside has two different light sources meeting at the glass, and at dusk the difference is obvious: the interior renders warmly and truthfully while the garden sits under something greener and flatter. Running Ketra on both sides removes that seam. The colour of the light on the facade, the specimen trees, and the terrace can be tuned to sit with the interior rather than against it, and both change together across the evening from one system.

A weatherised enclosure that lets the Lutron Clear Connect Gateway Type X live outdoors, powered and connected over a single weatherised ethernet connector. Without it the gateway sits indoors and cannot reliably reach fixtures out in the landscape.
The gateway is the detail that decides whether an outdoor Ketra design works. Wireless control has to actually reach the far end of a property, past masonry, planting, and distance, and siting that enclosure correctly is a design decision made against the site plan rather than something resolved on the day. We survey the run distances before specifying, because a beautiful fixture that drops off the system in the far corner of a garden is a service call every month.
Coastal Source also builds outdoor audio, and the same buried cabling and connector system carries both. Where a project wants lighting and sound through a garden, planning them together at trenching stage costs a fraction of adding the second one later.

EVERY DAY
Neutral warm white. The specimen tree carries the corner, the grasses read as texture, the cladding holds its own colour. This is the scene that runs three hundred nights a year, and it is the one that has to be right.
OCCASION
The same fixtures running colour. Columns washed lavender, one tree green, another cool white, beds in magenta. Nothing has been moved or added. It is a different button.
Most owners who ask for colour use it a handful of times a year, and that is the correct amount. The value is not that a garden can be magenta, it is that the everyday scene and the occasional one live on the same fixtures with no compromise to either. A conventional landscape installation that wants both has to choose, or install two sets of lights.
Ketra is engineered to run natively on Lutron's control systems, HomeWorks for residential work and Athena on the commercial side. This is not a limitation to work around, it is the reason the colour behaviour is coherent. A keypad button recalls a scene in which every Ketra fixture has its own colour temperature, its own intensity, and its own fade, alongside the conventional loads and the shades. Third party colour fixtures bolted onto a lighting system through an interface do not behave this way, and the difference shows up immediately in how a scene settles. If a project is running HomeWorks QSX, Ketra is available to it. If it is running RadioRA 3, Lumaris is the intelligent lighting that belongs on that system.
Colour rendering cannot be argued in a brochure and cannot be judged from a photograph, because the screen is doing its own colour reproduction. It has to be seen. Our San Carlos design center has two dedicated lighting rooms, and Ketra, Rania, and Lumaris are all installed and running in both. The Lounge is furnished as a family room and living space, with the sofas, rugs, art, timber, and decorative objects a real room actually contains, because that is where colour rendering either holds up or does not. The Office is a deliberately clean workspace environment, which is where colour temperature across the day makes the most obvious difference and where the argument for daylight-matched white becomes concrete. The same fixtures in two different rooms, because a light source that flatters a lounge does not automatically suit a desk. Bring a fabric sample, a stone offcut, a paint card, or a piece of the actual wood. Designers and architects usually make up their minds within the first minute, and they frequently change what they were planning to specify. There is no charge to use the rooms.
