Commercial Lighting Design for Interiors and Exteriors

In-house lighting design, fixtures, controls and installation for offices, retail, hospitality and the outdoor spaces around them.

Commercial Lighting Designed In House

Regent5's in-house lighting designers start from the architecture, the finishes and the way each space will be used, then develop the lighting layouts, reflected ceiling plans, fixture schedules and photometric studies that define the project. Mockups settle questions about color, glare and output before fixtures are ordered. Where the owner or architect has already engaged a lighting designer, Regent5 carries that design through procurement, installation, aiming and commissioning so the intent survives into the finished space.

Lighting for Offices and Workplaces

Office lighting has to work for long days at a screen and still make the space feel considered. Regent5 balances ambient and task light, keeps glare off monitors and glass, and plans conference rooms so faces read well on camera. Open offices, private offices, lobbies and breakout spaces each get their own scenes, with daylight response near the windows and tunable-white lighting where the space benefits from it. Regent5 is a certified Lutron dealer for Athena and Vive in commercial spaces.

Retail, Hospitality and Restaurant Lighting

In retail and hospitality, lighting sells the product and sets the mood. Regent5 designs accent lighting that renders merchandise and materials accurately, softer layers for dining rooms, bars and tasting rooms, and scenes that shift from daytime service to evening without staff adjusting individual fixtures. Color rendering, beam angles and dimming behavior are chosen fixture by fixture, and DMX or color-changing lighting is coordinated where a venue calls for it.

Exterior and Site Lighting

The approach to a building shapes the first impression before anyone walks in. Regent5 designs exterior lighting for entries, walkways, patios, outdoor dining and landscape areas, with fixtures shielded and aimed to limit glare and light spill onto neighboring property. Outdoor lighting runs on schedules and the same control system as the interior, and final aiming is done after dark so brightness and sightlines can be judged on site.

Fixtures, Photometrics and Mockups

Photometric studies check light levels, uniformity and glare against the layout before anything is ordered, so the design is proven on paper first. Fixtures are then selected for output, color rendering, beam spread, trim and driver compatibility, from architectural lines such as Lucifer, DMF and Visual Comfort. Regent5 sources the fixtures, coordinates submittals and housings with the ceiling and millwork, installs them and aims them, so one team answers for how the finished lighting looks.

Controls, Energy Code and Commissioning

California's Title 24 energy code sets lighting power limits and requires controls such as occupancy sensing, multilevel dimming, daylight response and automatic shutoff in commercial spaces, so the control design is part of the lighting design from the first layout. Regent5 programs scenes, schedules and sensor behavior, commissions every space, and documents the system for the people who will run it. The electrical work behind the lighting, from circuits and drivers to panels, is planned and installed by the same team.

Commercial Lighting Design FAQs

Does Regent5 design commercial lighting in house?

Yes. Regent5's in-house lighting designers develop lighting layouts, reflected ceiling plans, fixture schedules and photometric studies for offices, retail, hospitality and exterior spaces. Where the owner or architect has already engaged a lighting designer, Regent5 carries that design through procurement, installation, aiming and commissioning.

What does a commercial lighting design include?

Typical deliverables are lighting layouts on the reflected ceiling plan, a fixture schedule with lamp, optic and driver details, photometric studies for light levels and glare, a control zoning and scene plan, and mockups where color or output needs to be seen in person. The design is coordinated with the architect, the interior designer and the electrical drawings so it can be built as drawn.

Can Regent5 design exterior lighting for a commercial property?

Yes. Exterior work covers entries, walkways, patios, outdoor dining and landscape areas. Fixtures are shielded and aimed to limit glare and light spill, outdoor lighting runs on schedules tied to the control system, and final aiming happens after dark so the result can be judged from the site.

How does California's Title 24 energy code affect commercial lighting?

Title 24 limits lighting power in commercial spaces and requires controls such as occupancy sensing, multilevel dimming, daylight response and automatic shutoff. Regent5 treats those requirements as part of the design from the first layout rather than adding sensors at the end, so the lighting meets code and still behaves the way the space is used.

Can lighting be upgraded in an occupied commercial space?

Often, yes. Fixture replacements, new controls and selective rewiring can be phased around business hours where the job allows, area by area, so the space stays open. A site visit and the existing drawings show what can change without opening ceilings and where new circuits or control wiring are needed.

What should we send to start a commercial lighting project?

Floor plans and any reflected ceiling plans, the use of each space, finish selections if they exist, photos of the existing lighting and controls, and the target schedule. From that, Regent5 can confirm fit and propose a design engagement. Cost follows scope and drawings, so a budget conversation starts once those are in hand.
