Lutron Rania Lighting

Lighting plays a critical role in the comfort, functionality, and atmosphere of a home. Regent5 designs and installs advanced lighting control and motorized shading systems that allow homeowners to control the lighting environment throughout their entire property. Our lighting systems integrate architectural lighting, decorative fixtures, motorized shades, and daylight management into a unified control platform. These systems allow lighting scenes to automatically adjust based on time of day, occupancy, or homeowner preferences.Regent5 specializes in premium lighting control platforms including Lutron RadioRA3 systems, Lutron HomeWorks QSX systems, as well as lighting integration through Savant automation systems and Control4 lighting systems.

Ketra Colour Science, White Light Only

Regent5 is a certified Lutron dealer and a C10 and C7 licensed contractor, CSLB License 1033103. We design, install, and service Lutron Rania for homes in Atherton, Woodside, Portola Valley, Hillsborough, Los Altos Hills, Los Altos, Menlo Park, Palo Alto, and San Francisco. Rania is the newest of Lutron's three intelligent lighting brands, and the clearest way to describe it is this: it uses Ketra's colour mixing technology, applied to white light. There is no saturated colour capability. What you get instead is a tunable white that runs from 1,800K, an incandescent-like glow, up to 5,500K, which reads as midday daylight, and holds a CRI of 90 or above across most of that range, from 2,700K through 5,000K. That is a wider span and a better rendering figure than conventional tunable white products deliver.

Choosing Between Rania and Ketra

This is the question we get asked most, and it has a straightforward answer. If a project needs saturated colour, a wall washed in a specific hue, a room that changes character for an event, art lighting tuned to a particular palette, then Ketra is the only option in the range that does it. If the project needs exceptional white light and nothing more, Rania delivers colour rendering in the same class at a lower point in the range. Most estates want both, and they can coexist on one system. A common and sensible split is Ketra in the great room, the dining room, and anywhere art hangs, with Rania carrying the bedrooms, hallways, studies, and secondary spaces. Both run on the same control system, both appear in the same scenes, and to the owner it is simply the lighting. If you want to settle the question rather than argue it from specification sheets, our San Carlos design center has two dedicated lighting rooms with Ketra, Rania, and Lumaris all installed. The Lounge is furnished as a family and living space with real materials and finishes. The Office is a clean workspace environment. Seeing Rania against Ketra on the same stone, the same timber, and the same fabric usually settles the specification in a few minutes.

The D2 Downlight, New Construction and Remodeler

The D2 is a two inch aperture downlight and the piece most projects are built around. A small aperture is what lets a ceiling read as clean, because the fitting recedes rather than announcing itself, which is why lighting designers keep specifying two inch even when larger apertures would be cheaper. It comes in fixed, adjustable, and wall wash configurations, so one aperture size covers general illumination, directional accent onto art or a stone face, and an even wash down a wall. Two versions exist for two situations. The New Construction D2 installs to the frame during rough-in, which means it has to be on the drawings before the ceiling closes. The D2 Remodeler installs through a finished ceiling, which is what makes Rania viable in a house that is already complete.

Lamps, PAR, and Tape

Rania is not only a recessed product, and the rest of the range is what lets a room hold together. The A20 lamp puts Rania light into a standard A-series shape for wall sconces, decorative pendants, and table lamps, in E26 or GU24 bases. This matters more than it sounds: a decorative fixture running a conventional bulb next to a Rania downlight will look wrong, and the A20 is how that gets solved. The S30 is a PAR30 lamp for track and five inch recessed housings, offered in five beam angles from focused spot to very wide flood. The S38 is a PAR38 for track and six inch housings, with four beam angles including a tight ten degree spot for art. Rania tape light carries the same 1,800K to 5,500K range into coves, stair details, curved mirror edges, and under cabinet runs.

Built for Lutron Control, Deliberately

Rania was engineered from the start to run on Lutron's control systems rather than being made universal and then adapted. On residential work that means HomeWorks. The benefit is that colour temperature and intensity are both scene properties, so a single keypad button can set every fixture in a room to its own level and its own warmth, then fade there over a chosen interval. It also means the system can shift colour temperature across the day automatically, calculated from the position of the sun at the location of the house rather than from clock times, so the behaviour stays right through the year without intervention.

Specifying It Properly

Rania decisions get made early or they get made badly. Aperture size, trim finish, beam angle per location, fixed against adjustable against wall wash, and the point at which the New Construction housing has to be ordered are all rough-in decisions on a new build. Retrofitting the D2 Remodeler into a finished house is possible and is one of the product's real strengths, but ceiling void depth, joist positions, and existing wiring all need checking before anything is ordered rather than after. We work from the reflected ceiling plan and the fixture schedule alongside the lighting designer where there is one, and we produce the schedule ourselves where there is not.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Lutron Rania?

Rania is the newest of Lutron's three intelligent lighting brands. It applies Ketra's colour mixing technology to white light only. The range runs from 1,800K, an incandescent-like glow, up to 5,500K, which reads as midday daylight, and holds a CRI of 90 or above from 2,700K through 5,000K.

What is the difference between Rania and Ketra?

Saturated colour. Ketra produces actual hues as well as white; Rania produces white light only, though at a wider temperature range and higher rendering than conventional tunable white products.

If a project needs a wall washed in a specific tone or a room that changes character for an event, Ketra is the only option. If it needs exceptional white light and nothing more, Rania delivers that at a lower point in the range. Most estates use both.

What is the D2 downlight, and why a two inch aperture?

A small aperture lets a ceiling read as clean, because the fitting recedes rather than announcing itself. It is why lighting designers keep specifying two inch even where larger apertures cost less. The D2 comes in fixed, adjustable, and wall wash configurations, so one aperture covers general illumination, accent onto art or stone, and an even wall wash.

Can Rania go into a house that is already finished?

Yes. The D2 Remodeler installs through a finished ceiling rather than requiring access from above or installation to the frame at rough-in. Ceiling void depth, joist positions, and existing wiring all need checking before ordering, which is a survey rather than a guess.

Does Rania come in anything other than downlights?

Yes, and this matters more than it sounds. The A20 lamp puts Rania light into a standard A-series shape for sconces, pendants, and table lamps in E26 or GU24, which is how you avoid a decorative fixture running a conventional bulb looking wrong beside a Rania downlight. The S30 PAR30 offers five beam angles, the S38 PAR38 four including a ten degree spot. Rania tape light carries the same range into coves and joinery.

Does Rania need a Lutron control system?

Yes. Rania was engineered from the start for Lutron control rather than made universal and adapted. On residential work that means HomeWorks. The benefit is that colour temperature and intensity are both scene properties, so one keypad button sets every fixture to its own level and its own warmth and fades there over a chosen interval.

Can Rania shift colour temperature across the day?

Yes. The system calculates sunrise, sunset, civil dawn, and civil dusk from the location of the house and runs on sun events rather than clock times, so the behaviour stays correct through the year without anyone adjusting it.

Can I compare Rania against Ketra before deciding?

Yes. Our San Carlos design center has two dedicated lighting rooms with Ketra, Rania, and Lumaris all installed and running. The Lounge is furnished as a living space with real materials and finishes; the Office is a clean workspace environment. Seeing them on the same stone and the same timber usually settles the specification in minutes.
